What we saw as we entered Dent Rapids...looks worse than it was
YUCULTA AND DENT RAPIDS
After sharing a morning cup
of coffee together, we waved good-bye to our friends as we made our way to Calm
Channel and eventually to the rapids. We have been doing a slow cruise in order
to time the slack at Yuculta Rapids. We will
have to wait out the Dent Rapids probably at Big Bay
and either cross them early this evening or early tomorrow morning. We are making our way through a light fog and
drizzle right now.
I have been on watch for
sometime staring at several shades of grey along with a few boats heading in
the same direction probably with the same goal in mind. David has been busy
making our clam chowder with the clam cache left over from yesterday’s harvest.
As we drew near the first set
of rapids, a Canadian power boat overtook us, and they really looked like they
knew what they were doing. We decided to increase our speed and follow
them. “Together” we made it through a
few whirlpools which David expertly navigated. We then saw our leader boat
turning toward Dent Rapids. David rechecked the information and realized that
we were ahead of schedule so could make it through...our trail blazing boat
unknowingly gave us the courage to press on.
At one point we lost sight of our fearless leader in the fog. After passing Little Dent Point, we knew we
were in the clear and gave a celebratory High Five. David’s heart was racing
but there was a big grin on his face.
A Boat with a view!
After 7 hours of cruising, we
anchored among the Cordero
Islands. We again have the entire spot to ourselves which
is pretty amazing. Greene Pt. Rapids are
just around the corner so we are in good shape to hit them around 1:00 tomorrow
afternoon. Plenty of time to relax and explore.
We attempted a stern line to
shore for the first time We thought we had it well in hand but we picked the
wrong rock to secure the line to…it came floating back to us. We chose a
friendlier rock the second time and it looks like it will do the trick.
Enjoyed our clam chowder, set
out two crab pots, took a tour of the area in our skiff, showered and now the
evening is ours. It will be an early night. There’s something about knowing you
have some potentially treacherous rapids to conquer that plays havoc on the
mind and body. David timed it beautifully, and it was so nice to have the company
of our mystery Canadian boaters along the way.
The start of some great clam chowder
