Cowichan, Vancouver
Island
Continuing our tour of the
eastern coast of Vancouver Island, we checked
out Compton Bay and Maple Bay
on our way to Cowichan. Both
destinations are now on our “places to explore” list which grows by the
day! Cowichan was one of the first towns
we visited with our friends, Ron and Lynne, when we were still learning how to
operate the Belle.
We were here five years ago
for our 30th anniversary and had an elegant dinner at the Masthead
restaurant with our children. Things have really changed here with much more
development along the shore and many more shops to stroll. We found a bakery
and cheese shop and secured our baguette for tonight’s crab feast. Being here
again made me realize how many things have changed in our family in five years,
as well. Our children are now married and have children of their own!
We waited for slack tide in
the Samsun Narrows after leaving our tour through Maple Bay.
Even 15 minutes before perfect slack, we were feeling the tug of the
undercurrents on our boat. Small speed boats just screamed right through, but
with our seven food draft, we can get tossed about by the several whirlpools
and eddies. We don’t mind waiting for the optimum time to make it through
safely.
Found an easy anchorage in Cowichan Bay, and I was ready to drop a crab
trap! As long as my husband is willing to pluck those angry crustaceans with
clicking pincers out of the trap, I am fine with it. Getting into the psyche of
a crab is not easy, but we did read that this is a good spot for crabbing. Hope
springs eternal. We used prawn heads this time and dropped only one trap to
lessen the disappointment.
We would stay another day if
we could but must head for Pender
Island tomorrow to make
our way closer to Bellingham to meet up with Ashley and Ada on the 21st.
