Blind Bay, Shaw
Island on Our Way to Bellingham
We have never anchored here
before and a careful watch for depth on our way in was the order of the
day. A warning of rocks off Blind Island
kept us mindful as we glided in. This is just an overnight for us.
After a very relaxing morning
before leaving Roche
Harbor, we finally said
good-bye around 12:30
heading for a new destination, Olga on Orcas Island.
There were multiple whirlpools and currents tugging at our boat just outside of
Roche Harbor and David had a workout at the
wheel for the first 30 minutes.
As we approached Olga and
studied our charts and reread our information, we were not that comfortable
with the anchoring conditions or the depths within the bay. It also didn’t seem
to provide the wind shelter we needed.
We did a U-turn of sorts and
headed for Shaw Island which will put us in a good
position to take off for Bellingham,
WA tomorrow morning. The Southeastern winds are threatening to act
up this evening so we hope that we have found a good refuge from the worst of
it.
The shoreline here has
several homes and lots of luscious lawns. A ferry dock is right at the mouth of
the bay, but I haven’t heard a blasting horn from any ferry so far…it is quite
peaceful here, indeed.
It will be an early rise
tomorrow so that we can take advantage of slack tide through Obstruction Pass
and then weave ourselves through the San Juans to Bellingham Bay.
