June 26 Red Bluff Bay to Warm Springs
Departed 9:30 52
degrees light rains in morning
Our trip today took us north on Chatham Channel on flat calm
water. It was a short three hours to
Warm Springs, and we were lucky to snag a spot on the public dock. I had to
leap to the dock (not quite like a gazelle) which I haven’t had to do in a long
time and is a maneuver you should not attempt if you are old and slow. The current pushed by the powerful waterfall
was not helping us, but we managed to get her secured.
Dave and I walked up the boardwalk to the free bath house
and there were two rooms available. We hurried back to the boat and grabbed our
towels and headed back. Sitting in the hot tub with the curtains pulled back
looking at the bay and feeling the soft cool breeze was heavenly. Those
soothing waters were the perfect relief for David’s ailing back. Afterward, we
walked along the lower boardwalk to the waterfalls past several small homes
with large solar panels. We read that we would find a small store with a supply
of ice cream. We only discovered a building for sale that looked like it once
was a store of some kind. No ice cream today.
This seems to be a very popular spot. I read that in July
and August there have been up to 300 boaters anchored, docked or arriving in speed boats for the day (all the
more reason to visit here in June!) A young man on the boat behind us told us
that there were several boats that rafted alongside docked boats last night and
to be prepared. Sure enough, around 6:30, a salmon fishing boat came alongside
and tied up to us. They were kind enough to hook us up to their generator for
power. In order for them to get to the dock, they needed to climb on to our boat and
cross our stern deck making their way past our laundry! Lucky them. They left
early this morning, and David noticed the individual towels hanging out to dry
on their stern. I am sure the Warm Springs is a great escape for hard working fisherman.
