Cloudy 5 am departure
Allison Harbour to Fury Cove in
Fitzhugh Sound
This morning the weather reports forecasted light winds with 1-2 foot swells which were the best boating conditions in the
last 3 days. The five-hour trip wasn’t scary but turned out to be darn unpleasant
with no real relief until the last half hour. From the start we encountered
long rolling waves which had us constantly pitching. Halfway through the
cruise, we started rolling from side to side for hours. I was pretty much glued
to my wheelhouse seat while listening to sounds of objects going rogue.
The book cupboard opened and
spilled out loads of books, cleaning aids fell from a cupboard into the toilet,
our iPads slid from the desk top and met up with falling binders onto the
wheelhouse floor, and I found our small stateroom TV dangling from its cords. Luckily,
the galley only suffered one casualty…a bottle of allspice fell and spilled all
over the sink counter. We are doing
better at securing items, but obviously, we still have work to do. Where are
those bungee cords?
Cape Caution
When we anchored in Fury Cove, a
tug we saw in Allison Harbour, glided up to us and the pilot asked how our
passage was. He told us that his trip yesterday was horrible. We remember
listening to his voice over the radio yesterday reporting terrible conditions.
We picked the right day.
Today was an important day for
us. We crossed open water for the first time and rounded Cape Caution. It was an amazing feeling as I looked out at
that vast ocean with the knowledge that the next “Land-ho!” would be Japan!
Nothing but ocean out our port window
Fury Cove is a snug anchorage with
crushed shell beaches and a “peep-hole” to the channel. It is a great haven for
boats either heading into the open water or for those who have experienced it
and need to soak in its peacefulness before continuing north.
We were cruising with the big boys
today. Saw two cruise ships heading south.
