FURY COVE TO KISAMEET BAY
It was a gloriously sunny morning as we headed up Fitzhugh
Channel on gentle waters. My kind of boating. Three hours later, it clouded
over and the channel became choppy. We
were on an intense log watch throughout our journey.
We had planned to visit Namu and anchor there. Namu has an
abandoned salmon cannery active from the late 1800’s to the early 1960’s, it once was a bustling place. We decided just to do a “cruise by” and looked at the
weather beaten collapsed buildings from the comfort of our wheelhouse. David
loves to explore old buildings but this site looked dangerous.
We grabbed our books and started searching for a new
destination. We read that Kisameet was one of the best anchorages north of
Namu. Sounded good to us. It took a great deal of maneuvering into the hidden
bay but it truly was lovely. We ended up being the only boat there for the
night.
I read that in Kisameet, archaeologists found Heilsuk remains
which were over 10,000 years old. School
children in Bella Bella made bentwood boxes for their ancestors’ remains, and
they were laid to rest near the townsite. Also found here is a glacial clay called
kisolite. It is hand harvested and used in skin care products.
It was a quiet night. The only sign of civilization was a
satellite dish at the foot of a trail and two buoys floating near shore.
Sasquatch has cell service!
