OCEAN FALLS TO SHEARWATER MARINA

Seals on the docks in Ocean Falls

It was smooth going on our way through Lama Passage to Shearwater as the tide coaxed us along.  I tried everything from radio to texting to leaving a phone message to see if there was moorage available. We were finally able to hail the harbormaster on our radio when the marina was in our sights.

David had me prepare for a starboard tie and then when we approached the dock, it was clear that we needed to tie up on the port side. I was hustling to get soggy lines and tenders out in time. The harbormaster was a most accommodating fellow giving us an outside tie on the end of a dock. It was pouring buckets of rain, yet he helped guide us in and got us an extension for our power cord.  Lots of American boats joined us on the docks that evening. In fact, the USA is well represented in these waters.

We were looking forward to visiting the hardware and grocery stores for some much-needed items. The hardware store was closed, and we experienced definite “sticker shock” in the grocery store.  We hesitated to buy a gallon of milk for $10 (about $8.50 US) but decided to get it and pretty much nothing else. It made sense that prices would be higher in such a secluded place, but it made more sense to wait until we arrived in Ketchikan for the rest of our shopping. There was nothing we couldn't live without for another week.

After we settled in, a young man approached our boat and pointed out his boat across the marina to another dock. To our amazement, his boat was one of the Belle’s sister boats. There were only five built in 1946, all cleverly named Ivercan 1,2,3,4, and 5. Ours was once Invercan 5 and the other boat here used to be Invercan 3. It was a new discovery for all of us since we only knew of the existence of Ivercan 2 and each of our own boats. When Zach purchased his boat, now Levi-Michelle, there was a tree growing through the deck! He hopes to get it back into fishing seiner shape. So wonderful to find someone else who appreciates the history and uniqueness of these old boats and wants to do the work to restore it.

Few marinas will accept your garbage and recyclables but here they do. After lugging all that stuff up, we had pizza and beer at the pub on the pier and watched the second NBA championship game. The Warriors walked away with a victory.  Yay!
